'Mother Robin' wins CNN Hero of the Year

Los Angeles (CNN) - Robin Lim, an American woman who has helped thousands of poor Indonesian women have a healthy pregnancy and birth, was named the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year on Sunday night.

Through her Bumi Sehat health clinics, "Mother Robin," or "Ibu Robin" as she is called by the locals, offers free prenatal care, birthing services and medical aid in Indonesia, where many families cannot afford care.

"Every baby's first breath on Earth could be one of peace and love. Every mother should be healthy and strong. Every birth could be safe and loving. But our world is not there yet," Lim said during "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute," which took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and recognized Lim and the other top 10 CNN Heroes of 2011. 

Many women in the developing world do not have access to contraception or maternal care. According to the United Nations Population Fund, three out of five women giving birth in South Asia do so without a skilled birth attendant on hand.

In Indonesia, the average family earns the equivalent of $8 a day, according to the International Monetary Fund. But a baby delivery costs about $70 at a hospital, and a Caesarian section can cost as much as $700.

"The situation is bad ... babies are unattended, deliveries have become commercialized, and mothers die from hemorrhage after childbirth because they can't afford proper care," Lim told CNN earlier this year.

The CNN Hero of the Year was chosen by the public after an 11-week vote on CNN.com. For being named Hero of the Year, Lim will receive $250,000 for her cause. That's in addition to the $50,000 that she and the rest of the top 10 Heroes each received for making the top 10.

This is the fifth year that CNN, with the help of entertainers and other celebrities, have honored everyday people changing the world. Among this year's presenters were comedians Jerry Seinfeld and George Lopez; actors J.R. Martinez and Chris Colfer; musical artists Ice Cube and will.i.am; model Christy Turlington Burns; former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner; and actresses Laura Dern, Mary-Louise Parker and Sofia Vergara. 

Kid Rock performed the song "Care" from his platinum-selling album "Born Free," while Miley Cyrus sang her triple-platinum hit "The Climb."

Turlington Burns introduced Lim's video tribute during Sunday's show, before the Hero of the Year announcement. As founder of Every Mother Counts, she is also a passionate advocate for maternal health around the world.

"Eight years ago, after giving birth to my first child, Grace, I felt what could have been a life-threatening complication," she told the audience of nearly 5,000. "It suddenly got very scary, very fast. If I hadn't received the expert care in the hospital birthing center I was in, then I may have not been so fortunate.

"My wish is that every mother all over the world has the same chance surviving childbirth I had. My friend Robin Lim shares that wish and she spends her days and nights making it so."

Turlington Burns recently made the trip to Indonesia to meet Lim and see her work firsthand.

Lim became a midwife after her sister -- and her sister's baby -- died from complications during pregnancy several years ago. She and her husband then sold their home in Hawaii and moved to Bali to "reinvent their lives," she said.

"It was there she learned she could make a difference," Turlington Burns said. "She opened a clinic, Bumi Sehat, so poor mothers can give birth safely and be treated with dignity and respect. She has delivered thousands of babies, and that is why they call her 'Ibu' -- Mother."

After being announced as the CNN Hero of the Year, a tearful Lim accepted the award from host Anderson Cooper and made an impassioned plea for help.

"Today on our Earth, 981 mothers in the prime of their life will die -- and tomorrow again and yesterday," she said. "And I'm asking you to help change that. We don't even know how many babies are lost, but all of us can help change that."

Πώς πλουτίζουν ορισμένοι μαιευτήρες

Παρά την κρίση, «η βιομηχανία των καισαρικών» εξακολουθεί να αναπτύσσεται, εξοβελίζοντας τον φυσιολογικό τοκετό και... πλουτίζοντας ορισμένους μαιευτήρες. Μια επίσημη και δημόσια αυτή τη φορά έρευνα από το Κεντρικό Συμβούλιο Υγείας στα μαιευτήρια της χώρας δείχνει ότι η κατάσταση συνεχώς επιδεινώνεται και δεκάδες χιλιάδες γυναίκες, κάθε χρόνο, βιώνουν ένα επώδυνο όσο και άσκοπο σοβαρό χειρουργείο για να γεννήσουν το παιδί τους.

Τα στοιχεία που έχει στη διάθεσή της η «Κ» είναι, στην κυριολεξία, τρομακτικά. Όταν σε άλλες χώρες οι καισαρικές δεν ξεπερνούν το 20% των γεννήσεων, στην Ελλάδα αντιπροσωπεύουν το 44% στα δημόσια νοσοκομεία και το 56% στα ιδιωτικά μαιευτήρια. Υπάρχουν μαιευτήρια στα οποία επτά στις δέκα γεννήσεις γίνονται με καισαρική. Τα νέα ζευγάρια γνωρίζουν πολλές φορές τον κίνδυνο και αναζητούν πλέον όχι τον «καλό» γιατρό, αλλά «κάποιον να εμπιστεύονται».

Τα στοιχεία

Σε 38 από τα 53 ιδιωτικά μαιευτήρια της χώρας (που έδωσαν στοιχεία στο ΚΕΣΥ) σημειώθηκαν το 2008 57.162 γεννήσεις, οι περισσότερες (το 54%) με καισαρική τομή. Το 2009 έγιναν στα μαιευτήρια αυτά 54.943 τοκετοί (2.000 λιγότεροι από το προηγούμενο έτος), αλλά οι καισαρικές έφτασαν το 56%.

Ένα άλλο εντυπωσιακό στοιχείο έχει να κάνει με το γεγονός ότι υπάρχει μεγάλη συγκέντρωση υπηρεσιών, καθώς το 74% των τοκετών στον ιδιωτικό τομέα γίνεται σε τρία μεγάλα μαιευτήρια της Αθήνας και τρία της Θεσσαλονίκης. Αντίστοιχα, στα 84 μαιευτικά τμήματα δημοσίων νοσοκομείων έγιναν το 2008 55.480 τοκετοί (το 42% με καισαρική τομή) και το 2009 56.085 γεννήσεις, εκ των οποίων μόνο το 56% με φυσιολογικό τοκετό. Τα νέα στοιχεία δεν είναι ενθαρρυντικά για τον δημόσιο τομέα, αφού σε δεκατέσσερις μαιευτικές κλινικές οι γιατροί στέλνουν πάνω από τις μισές γυναίκες στο χειρουργείο, ενώ δέκα κλινικές υπολειτουργούν, με λιγότερους από 500 τοκετούς τον χρόνο.

"Listening to Children's Wisdom": a talk with Didi

"Where are children's minds on the continuum of consciousness? Yogic tradition sees the mind as having many layers. While usual adult consciousness stems from highly developed intellectual and material levels, children's awareness exists primarily in other subtler realms. From these realms comes much wisdom and particularly unique insights.

We will look at these levels of consciousness and discuss examples of how children teach and guide us as much as we teach and guide them".

The presentation will be in English, given by Didi Ananda Uttama, a yogic nun in Ananda Marga. Didi ran the NeoHumanist Center in Marousi for 7 years and now works with mothers and children in several different Mediterranean countries.

Η γέννηση της Άρτεμης

Όταν γεννήθηκε η Ευτυχία, η μαία μου, η Έλντα, ηταν 7 μηνών έγκυος στην Άρτεμη και πιστεύω ότι η παρουσία της μικρής ήταν με κάποιο τρόπο αισθητή σε όλο τον τοκετό μου. Οι δυο τους μεγαλώνουν μαζί, ήδη από την κοιλιά, και φαίνεται να έχουν πολύ ιδιαίτερη σχέση - γελάνε όταν συναντιούνται και παίζουν υπέροχα. Η Άρτεμη γεννήθηκε πριν ένα χρόνο στις 5 Δεκεμβρίου στο σπίτι. Η Έλντα ήταν μόνη με τον σύντροφό της όπως ακριβώς το ήθελε. Αυτή είναι η ιστορία της με δικά της λόγια. 

Η μικρή μου γεννήθηκε σε τρεις ώρες την ημέρα που είχα διαλέξει. Ήταν 41 εβδομάδων, Κυριακή με Νέα Σελήνη, μέρα της Άρτεμης, προστάτιδας του τοκετού. Όλα ήταν έτοιμα στο σπίτι. Μέχρι και φρέσκα λουλούδια από το δάσος δίπλα από την πισίνα είχα. Είχα κοιμηθεί νωρίς το βράδυ και ξύπνησα από τα κύματα της μήτρας. Σηκώθηκα κι έκατσα δίπλα στη φωτιά. Τα κύματα πηγαιονοερχόντουσαν κι αφού πέρασε καμιά ώρα μπρος – πίσω στην τουαλέτα, ένοιωσα έναν τόσο δυνατό πόνο που νόμισα ότι θα λιποθυμήσω. Ζήτησα από τον σύντροφό μου να γεμίσει την πισίνα – ήταν χαλαρός… περίμενε ότι θα γεννήσω μετά από καμια-δυο μέρες. Όταν μπήκα στο ζεστό νερό, ένοιωσα το σώμα μου να ανακουφίζεται. Του ζήτησα να μου φέρει και τα ρόδια που είχα καθαρισμένα στην κατάψυξη. Ήταν τέλεια – γλυκά, δροσερά ενώ εγώ καιγόμουν.

Σε κάθε κύμα έκανα chanting – στην παύλα βαθιά εισπνοή και μια χούφτα ρόδια. Κρατιόμουν από ένα σχοινί περασμένο στο δοκάρι πάνω από την πισίνα όταν ένοιωσα τα νερά να σπάνε και το κεφάλι του παιδιού μου στην είσοδο του κόλπου. Ο αγαπημένος μου ετοιμάστηκε να πάει να φέρει τη μαία αλλά του ζήτησα να κάτσει στη μπάλα να με κρατάει. Τα πράγματα δυσκόλευαν για μένα – ο πόνος χαμηλά στη μέση ήταν σχεδόν αφόρητος. Έκανα μεγάλη προσπάθεια να αναπνέω όταν έφευγε το κύμα και πολύ σύντομα ερχόταν το επόμενο με μια έντονη αίσθηση να σπρώξω. Δεν έσπρωξα καθόλου. Είχα το ένα γόνατο κάτω, το άλλο ανοιχτό για να δώσω χώρο. Οι τελευταίες συστολές ήταν απίστευτες – ένοιωθα ένα μπουμ… το παιδί έσπρωχνε να βγει, κρατούσα το κεφάλι της με τα χέρια μου. Ξαφνικά βγήκε το κεφάλι και ύστερα από μια πολύ μικρή παύση έπεσε όλη στο νερό. Την πήρα αγκαλιά – μια πανέμορφη θεά!!

Και δυο (παραπάνω) λόγια για την Έλντα από την ίδια ...

Ονομάζομαι Έλντα Λάτη. Σπούδασα μαιευτική στα ΤΕΙ Αθήνας το 1998 και στη συνέχεια εργάστηκα ως μαία σε διάφορες συνθήκες. Το 2002, ενώ δούλευα σε μια μικρή ιδιωτική κλινική ξεκίνησα να αναλάβω ολοκληρωτικά τη φροντίδα ενός φυσικού τοκετού. Άρχισα να συμμετέχω σε συναντήσεις του Συνδέσμου Θηλασμού και του Birthvoice και παρακολουθούσα πολλές ομιλίες και σεμινάρια. Όταν ανακάλυψα τη Birthlight Yoga χάρηκα πολύ γιατί μου έδωσε πολύ καλά εργαλεία για τη σωστή προετοιμασία της εγκύου και αργότερα το Birthlight Baby Yoga μου έδωσε τη χαρά να βοηθάω τους γονείς να απολαύσουν το μωρό τους και να ενισχύσουν το δεσμό τους.

Μου αρέσει πολύ ο τοκετός στο σπίτι, στο νερό αλλά συνεργάζομαι και με πολλούς γιατρούς για την επίτευξη ενός όμορφου τοκετού σε μαιευτήριο. Οι υπηρεσίες μου ονομάζονται «Φιλικές Γέννες» και είναι μια ολοκληρωμένη μαιευτική φροντίδα βασισμένη σε ό,τι καλύτερο έχει να προσφέρει η παραδοσιακή αρχαία μαιευτική σε συνδυασμό με την σύγχρονη επιστήμη και την τεχνολογία.

British Study: Half Of All Pregnant Women Could Give Birth At Home Safely

LONDON -- A new study in England shows little difference in complications among the babies of women with low-risk pregnancies who delivered in hospitals versus those who gave birth with midwives at home or in birthing centers.

Based on the findings, researchers said women with uncomplicated pregnancies in England should be able to choose where they want to give birth – and one expert said about half of all pregnant women here could potentially safely give birth outside a hospital.

But they sounded a note of caution for first-time mothers and their infants, who may face a higher risk if they choose a home birth. "I would never say women should give birth in a particular place, but hope this gives women more information to make an informed choice," said Dr. Peter Brocklehurst, director of the Institute for Women's Health at University College Hospital in London, one of the paper's lead authors. He conducted the research while at Oxford University. "Birth isn't an abnormal process, it's a physiological process," he said. "And if your pregnancy and labor is not complicated, then you don't need a high level of specific expertise."

Brocklehurst added that about 50 percent of pregnant women in England – those who are low-risk – should be able to choose where to have their baby.

More than 90 percent of pregnant women in England now give birth in a hospital. Some officials say the new study should prompt women to consider alternatives.

"This is about giving women a choice," said Mary Newburn of NCT, a U.K. charity for parents, one of the study's authors. She said midwife-run birth centers in England have a more homelike environment, with privacy, sofas and birthing pools.

In Britain, midwives deliver more than 60 percent of babies already. Similar care is provided in the Netherlands, where about a quarter of all births happen at home. Elsewhere in Europe, most births are led by doctors, although midwives may also be involved.

In the United States, however, less than one percent of births happen at home. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists does not support planned home births and warns evidence shows they have a higher risk of newborn death compared to planned hospital births. The training of midwives in the U.S. varies by state – and some have no regulations.

Brocklehurst and colleagues collected data for nearly 65,000 mothers and babies between 2008 and 2010 in England. Of those, there were 19,706 births in hospital obstetric wards, 16,840 births at home, 11,282 births in "freestanding" midwifery units – independent clinics where there are no doctors or access to anesthetics – and 16,710 births in "alongside" midwifery units, often housed within hospitals. All the pregnancies were low-risk, meaning the mothers were healthy and carried their baby to term. Women planning C-sections or expecting twins or multiple births were excluded from the study.

In the U.K.'s hospital obstetric wards, most low-risk women don't see a doctor during labor and are only treated by midwives. There didn't appear to be a difference for the infants' health based on where the mothers planned to give birth. But researchers found a higher risk for first-time mothers planning a home birth. Among those women, there were 9.3 adverse events per 1,000 births, including babies with brain damage due to labor problems and stillbirth. That compared to 5.3 adverse events per 1,000 births for those planning a hospital birth.

The study was published Friday in the medical journal, BMJ. It was paid for by Britain's department of health and another government health research body.

Dr. Tony Falconer, president of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, said his group supports "appropriately selected home birth." He noted the higher risk of problems among first-time mothers choosing a home birth and said that raised questions about where they should deliver.

For Emily Shaw of Oxfordshire, northwest of London, giving birth in a hospital wasn't appealing. She wanted home births for both her sons but because her first baby was induced into labor, she had to deliver him in a hospital in October 2008.

Shaw delivered her second son at home in April. "I felt much more comfortable there," she said. "Instead of getting into a car to go to the hospital, the midwives came to me." "It was nice to have the home comforts during labor," she added, saying she could eat in her own kitchen and use her own bathroom. "And unlike the hospital, they didn't kick out my partner in the middle of the night."

Γιατροί "αυθεντίες" - μητέρες χωρίς δύναμη?

Χτες άκουσα για μια περίπτωση που με προβλημάτισε πάλι. Ένα μωράκι 7,5 μηνών τρέμει και πλαντάζει στη θέα του μπιμπερό εδώ και τρεις μέρες που η μητέρα του αποφάσισε να σταματήσει να θηλάζει "μαχαίρι"... Και όλα αυτά γιατί η παιδίατρός της - "καθηγήτρια πανεπιστημίου" - της είπε ότι το γάλα της δεν έχει πια όλα τα απαραιτητα συστατικά (!!??) και χρειάζεται γάλα εμπλουτισμένο με σίδηρο κλπ γιατί αλλιώς...

Δεν μπαίνω καν στο θέμα σιδήρου - υπάρχουν πολλά που μπορεί να διαβάσει κανείς και να το ψάξει. Μπαίνω κατευθείαν στο μόνιμο θέμα μας - "να το ψάξει". Ένα από  τα πρώτα πράγματα που σε καλεί να κάνεις το παιδί σου, αν δεν το έχεις κάνει ήδη, είναι να πάρεις την ευθύνη, γι αυτό, για σένα, για όλα. Στην εγκυμοσύνη κιόλας αρχίζουν μικρές και μεγάλες  αποφάσεις από την επιλογή γυναικολόγου/ομάδας τοκετού μέχρι τι θα τρως και πόσους υπέρηχους - και αν - θα κάνεις. Η επιλογή του φυσικού τοκετού (άσχετα αν θα σου βγει ή όχι) είναι ίσως η πρώτη σημαντική ανάληψη ευθύνης - η αναγνώριση πως κανείς δεν μπορεί στην πραγματικότητα να γεννήσει για σένα. Και οι αποφάσεις συνεχίζουν και συνεχίζουν με τον παιδίατρο, το θηλασμό, τα πάντα από εδώ και πέρα... Το πόσο αφήνουμε την "επιστημονική" υπερ(παρα)πληροφόρηση και τις "καλόβουλες" συμβουλές ειδικών και μη, να μας αποπροσανατολίζουν συνδέεται άμεσα με το πόσο διατεθειμένες είμαστε να αναλάβουμε την ευθύνη, να καλλιεργούμε και να εμπιστευόμαστε το δικό μας μητρικό ένστικτο. Ευτυχώς για όλους η περίοδος των "αυθεντιών" τελειώνει και όχι τόσο "σιγά σιγά" πια.

Για την περίπτωση αυτή, αφού έκανα ένα εν θερμώ σχόλιο - "μα αυτό που κάνει είναι εγκληματικό" - αναφερόμενη περισσότερο στην παιδίατρο παρά στην μητέρα φυσικά - πρότεινα τελικά να επικοινωνήσει με κάποιους συμβούλους θηλασμού και την παρέπεμψα στις, πάντα σωτήριες για μένα, συναντήσεις La Leche. Βέβαια αυτή είναι μία από τις καλύτερες  περιπτώσεις - το μωράκι θήλασε για 7,5 μήνες. Κάποια άλλα, ύστερα από παρεμβάσεις γυναικολόγων και παιδιάτρων, στερούνται όχι μόνο το πρωτόγαλα αλλά και όλα τα υπέροχα που συνεπάγονται με τον θηλασμό...
